These FAQ’s are in relation to beneficiaries with any group travel insurance policy underwritten by Zurich Insurance plc.

Who is eligible for this insurance?

The policy is designed for eligible international students studying at an accredited language school, college or university in the UK. Immediate family members travelling with an eligible international student may also qualify, subject to the policy terms.

Cover is not available to anyone aged 66 or over at the time of departure.

Are there any healthcare registration requirements?

You must be registered under the healthcare system in your home country. If you are insured under this policy for six months or more, you must also register with a medical practitioner in the UK.

When does my insurance cover begin?

Cancellation cover begins when you are accepted for cover.

Other sections of the insurance begin when you leave your home to start your journey to the UK. Your insurance normally ends when you return home after completing your trip.

A trip that has already started when you are accepted for cover will not be insured.

What does the insurance cover?

Subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, the insurance can include cover for:

  • Cancellation or curtailment
  • Emergency medical treatment and other expenses
  • Personal accident
  • Baggage and valuables
  • Personal money, passports and documents
  • Personal liability
  • Missed departure
  • Overseas legal expenses
  • Certain irrecoverable course fees

Please check the current Statement of Insurance for the applicable benefit limits and excesses.

Does the policy cover pre-existing medical conditions?

The policy does not normally cover claims arising directly or indirectly from a pre-existing medical condition.

It may also exclude claims involving medical conditions for which you are waiting for treatment or investigation, have recently received specialist or hospital treatment, have received a terminal prognosis, or have not received a diagnosis.

Please read the “Important conditions relating to health” section of the policy carefully before travelling.

Is this private health insurance?

No. This is travel insurance providing cover for emergency medical treatment. It is not general private health insurance and does not cover routine, ongoing or planned medical treatment.

Private medical treatment is not covered unless it has been specifically authorised by the Emergency Assistance Service or is included in the Statement of Insurance.

What should I do in a medical emergency?

If you experience a serious illness or accident that may require hospital admission, medical repatriation or an early return home, you or someone acting for you must contact the Emergency Assistance Service.

The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year:

Emergency Assistance Service: +44 (0)1243 621058

If you require immediate emergency treatment and cannot contact the service beforehand, contact it as soon as reasonably possible afterwards.

Am I covered for trips outside the UK?

The policy may cover:

  • Direct journeys between your home country and the UK at the beginning and end of each academic term
  • Trips outside the UK that are a required part of your course
  • Leisure trips within Europe for up to 21 days in total during each policy term

Cover is subject to the policy conditions and the geographical area shown in your Statement of Insurance.

Am I covered if official advice warns against travel?

The policy does not cover travel to a country or area where the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, an equivalent government or national authority, or the World Health Organization has advised against all travel or all but essential travel.

Students should check current travel advice before travelling.

Are sports and activities covered?

The policy covers a range of sports and activities as standard, subject to its conditions and safety requirements.

Some activities may require additional cover, and personal liability cover is excluded for certain specified activities. Professional sports and professional entertainment are not covered.

Please check the “Sports and activities covered” section before taking part.

What happens if my return home is unexpectedly delayed?

If your return home is unavoidably delayed because of an event insured by the policy, cover may be automatically extended for the period of the delay, up to a maximum of 30 days.

Any longer extension must be agreed in writing by the insurer.

Contact your accommodation provider, transport provider or travel agent as soon as possible to discuss whether your booking can be deferred, rearranged or cancelled. Any refund will be subject to the provider’s terms and conditions.

If you paid by credit or debit card, you may also contact your card provider to ask whether any payment protection or chargeback options are available. A chargeback is not guaranteed and is separate from any claim made under this insurance policy.

Before travelling, regularly review the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) website https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice

The policy does not cover travel to a country or area where the FCDO, an equivalent government or national authority, or the World Health Organization has advised against all travel or all but essential travel.
