Staff Profiles test
Our English teachers have interesting stories to tell from places they’ve been to, where they taught English before to why they love what they do! Read about it all here and get to know them better. Who knows maybe you even have something in common.
DAVID ELLUL - DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
I started teaching in the tiny, sunny island of Malta in 2012 during the summer holidays while I was at university. I moved to the UK in late 2014 and started teaching at WLES in January 2015. Like most Maltese people, I speak quite a few languages: in addition to my native Maltese and English, I also speak Italian and a little bit of German.
I started learning the violin when I was 6 years old, and enjoy classical music to this day. Whenever you see me on the Tube with my earphones, you can assume I’m listening to some Beethoven symphony or a Tchaikovsky overture. I also enjoy watching football, although I have never been any good at it!
JAMIE LANGFORD – ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
After originally studying Fine Art, I sort of fell into teaching English accidentally in 2004 – and I’m still doing it now more than ten years later! I’ve had three years of experience teaching in Italy and I taught children for a short time in Japan. I enjoy teaching because I get a sense of satisfaction from helping people in a real way. It’s also less boring than being stuck behind a desk!
Outside of work, I mostly enjoy taking photographs – often of things other people would consider rubbish: derelict buildings and dirty pavements. See some of my photos here,I also read a lot of books. I don’t have any favourite authors or genres. I’ll read anything as long as it’s good! I like cinema too but I don’t get the opportunity to go as regularly as I would like.
BETH STACEY - ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
After completing my degree in English Language in 2013, I did my teacher training and then travelled the world for 6 months, exploring 7 beautiful countries and making wonderful memories. On returning, I began teaching in lovely Liverpool where I stayed for 3 years, whilst also learning Spanish. I enjoyed teaching all levels here though was particularly fond of FCE and CAE preparation exams becoming somewhat of a specialist in Cambridge exam classes! I moved to London in January 2018 to begin my WLES journey as an EFL teacher and then as Assistant Director of Studies.
Languages have always fascinated me, I still study Spanish when I can and am currently doing Delta Modules 2 and 3. Aside from language, I’m a self-confessed theatre nerd and when I’m not teaching, you will usually find me in the West End watching a musical or performing somewhere with my choir. I also enjoy reading and have been known to dabble in writing my own books.
REBECCA SUKKAR – SENIOR TEACHER
After completing a degree in English literature I spent some time in the Middle East, improving my childhood Arabic and teaching English in a secondary school. Then on my return to England I spent the next 10 years teaching English on the south coast in the summer, and then in various schools in central London. I finally settled in Ealing and have been happily working for WLES for more than 20 years.
I love words, and think of myself as a would-be writer. I guess I’m too busy preparing and giving lessons, and then marking students’ work to get pen on paper too often. But my flat is lined with well-thumbed books, and if you ask me for my idea of a happy day is would be to sit in the sunshine with a book of poetry in my hand, and lovely words in my head.
HARMI BAINS - SENIOR TEACHER AND HEAD OF OET
I love exploring different cultures and learning about new places, so, in 2003, I trained to become a teacher as I found it was a way to combine work with travel.
I taught for a year in Krakow, Poland, and spent a couple of years teaching in China. I've also worked in Saudi Arabia and Oman. Whilst in Oman I became a CELTA tutor and became involved in teacher training and development. Since being with WLES I've helped establish a Medical English Department, and I teach OET to doctors and nurses.
I'm also fond of literature and I love writing. I've had several novels and a couple of plays published, which are available on Amazon.
MIKE DUSTING
After studying Creative Writing at Leeds University, I decided that I wanted to see the world! I have always loved language and reading and writing so I thought travelling and teaching English was the perfect choice.
I did my CELTA teaching course in Thailand and planned to stay there for maybe a year. In the end I loved teaching there so much I stayed for 9 years! I taught in one of the largest English Schools in the country and also became a manager and did some teacher training and recruitment.
Now I’m back in England I’m still really enjoying teaching and meeting fantastic new students. In my free time you’ll mostly find me reading (usually about wizards), watching movies or listening to music. I also love watching and performing stand-up comedy.
KATALIN SARDI
I started teaching ESOL, Literacy and EFL in London in 2007 following the completion of the CELTA course. I later decided to study further and I first completed a BA (Hons) English Language and Spanish degree in 2011 then a Masters degree in TESOL in 2012 at the University of Westminster. I mainly taught exam classes for a few years after that (FCE, CAE, IELTS) and I joined the WLES team in 2016.
What I love most about teaching is the variety it brings every day and the opportunity it offers to meet people from different cultural backgrounds and to learn about their language and way of life. When I am not teaching, I am a mum to a wonderful, super energetic little girl who keeps me busy, so there's never a dull moment. In my spare time, which is scarce these days, I love spending time with my friends and family and whenever I get the chance I travel somewhere I have never been before or somewhere hot where the sun warms your skin and you can listen to sound of waves while lying on a sandy beach. Pure bliss.
SANJIT SIL
Having worked in the arts for almost 20 years, I needed a new challenge where I didn't have to deal with massive egos and personalities! Teaching English to foreign students seemed a natural choice and after five and a half years I have no regrets as well as enjoying the challenges that this arena of work presents on a daily basis.
I try to sneak in my interests in film and music (from Jazz and Indian Classical to Dance, Disco and Drum 'n' Bass) into lessons whenever possible. To really spice up the lessons I occasionally DJ by spinning upbeat tunes on my record players.
MONIKA SAADI
I have always been passionate about languages and for that reason I chose to study English and German at university. After graduation I started teaching English in London to people from all around the world. One of the best things about it is that I get to learn something from them too. When I see my students’ progress and the joy in their eyes when they pass an important exam, I realise how rewarding my job is. Their success is also my success.
As a mum of two little children I spend a lot of my free time in parks, at playgrounds, playing various games and reading picture books. If I get a chance to have a minute just for myself, I usually grab a book (for grown-ups) and a cup of tea and enjoy them in the peace and quiet.
EVI KUTASI
It started out as an innocent fling with a Creative Writing through Literature course in London, but then I ended up with an MA in English Language and Literature and a love for the world of adult education. I thoroughly enjoyed the Psychology modules at University, which led me to Applied Psychology and Yoga, so much so that I became a Yoga Teacher and a Yoga Therapist. Then I continued my studies at a Yoga College in India. Learning Sanskrit reminded me of the importance of learning strategies, so I became vested in methods that can facilitate concentration and boost memory. I’m still fascinated by discovering ways to fulfil the human potential linguistically in a classroom or holistically in a yoga class.
I love intensity (just look at my hair colour!) and variety which I have experienced in a wide range of jobs: apart from teaching General, Business and Military English, I’ve found time to lead yoga classes, provide yoga therapy consultations, write blog entries, manage websites, and become a Director of Studies at a language school in Hungary. I started teaching in the UK in 2019 and West London English School feels like home already. In my free time I take contemporary dance lessons (give me a shout if you know a great teacher in Ealing), go to concerts and enjoy meaningful conversations with people with a curiosity about life.
