The English Language Requirement is for ALL new and renewing drivers, regardless of if they were born in the UK or have UK Citizenship; and it must prove their B1 competence in Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening.

Language requirements

Trinity College London is one of the interim English language test providers approved by Transport for London (Tfl). Trinity College London's ISE I qualification will be accepted by Tfl as evidence of meeting the new B1 English level language requirement.

Alternatively,  you may also meet the Tfl language requirement by taking IELTS Academic and General Training tests; both of which are accepted by Tfl as evidence of meeting the language requirement.

You can satisfy TfL's language requirement by providing:

  • A certificate from one of TfL's secure English language test providers confirming that the applicant's level of proficiency in the English language is at level B1
  • Documentary evidence of a qualification (whether or not the qualification was obtained in the United Kingdom) that meets the Tfl requirement

About the course

The Trinity ISE I (B1 English level) test will assess your general English competence in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. These techniques include: skimming and scanning texts at high speed; writing essays, articles, letters, emails, and reviews; speaking with fluency and confidence; and expanding your vocabulary. We offer both full-time intensive Trinity ISE I and longer part-time courses.
